Car-Bar-Crib

Lloyd Banks only rides Beamer Benz or Bentleys, but how about a VW Beetle? It started with a simple idea familiar to Americans, the trailer.  Upgrade that trailer with a German makeover and what do you get?  An eco-friendly, child-friendly 3 floor ‘car’ where you can literally eat, sleep and drink in.  The first project that Markus Voglreiter worked on was a 70’s inspired auto residence in Austria.  The home that he built was 900 square foot which actually sounds very spacious compared to a Manhattan studio apartment.  The car-house is also 3 floors and compartmentalized with two dwelling areas making it appropriate for a small family.  A 3-liter heating and insulation technique makes the auto residence energy efficient and is minimized in its consumption.

The First Project: Car-House

Inside the car-house

Years later Voglreiter teamed up with his original muse Danielle Porsche with an investment of 1.6 million euros and built a car-restaurant-bar called “The Car. Das Auto”.  The establishment accomodates 300 guests and also has room for 350 on the terrace for outdoor dining.  The dining experience as Das Auto would feel like eating inside of a modern robot that truly caters to humans. Take a look at the pictures in the next pages of this one and only architecture!

Shirt Sculptures

Guerra de la Paz is like a magician that can pull out an adorable bunny from a black tophat.  Give them a shirt, and a whole new entity will come to life. Guerra de la Paz, Two Cuban artists Alain Guerra and Neraldo de la Paz, based in Miami presents a subversive parallel by using unconventional materials to convey a universal message.

Guerra de la Paz uses everyday t-shirts to form mosaic like sculptures that redefine waste.  Recycled art has been spotted in many forms lately and the point has been made, there are ways to reduce waste without going dumpster diving like freegans or spending hours sorting out recyclables into 5 different trash cans everyday.  The pieces are visually enticing while subtley implying that decadence can come from all resources and be manifested in various forms.  The construction of the pieces see intuitive but to form a sculpture based around the conept of organized chaos is far from simple.  Take a look at the strikingly sophisticated experimentation with t-shirts in the following pages.

Deepest Pool in the World

If you’re looking to find Nemo you’re at the right place.  In Brussels, Belgium the deepest pool in the world, Nemo 33 is open for wonderous underwater exploration.  Although it may lack seaweed and sea creatures roaming it is an amazing architectural project that extends underwater into a project that provides a completely man-made diving pool.   Perfect for scuba diving practices this 33 meter (105 feet) deep pool also doubles as a major tourist attraction.  The expansive pool is surprisingly free from the normal chlorine stench of pools.

The architect Sebastian Moran Vacca in collaboration with scuba diving expert John Beernaerts created a special filtering system that allows for it to be chemical free.  The facility consists of two pools and 2 pit caves which appear to be modern cavernous underwater lairs.  The air is renewed permanently in order to retain the correct amount of pressure  and the anchoring points may be adjusted depending on the activity taking place like film shootings or scientfic experiments.  The pool as a whole takes up a whopping 2,500,000 liters of water which is maintained at around 30 degrees celcius/ 86 degrees fahreheit.  That’s not all, Nemo 33 also hosts parties and also houses a restaurant, aqua gym and hydrotherapy. Round up your friends for an underwater birthday party in full diving gear!

Underwater Museum

James de Caires Taylor is an underwater street artist, surprising fish and other sealife with his unique sculptures.  The ocean floor by the coast of Grenada in the Carribbean now houses 65 underwater sculptures amusing scuba divers and sea animals passing by.  His sculptures look almost like well-placed ruins of the Titanic and which gives it an authentic sense of belonging for art outside of a traditional museum.  With time the sculptures age and evolve and blend into its surroundings as coral reef forms around them and sea life growing on top of the structures.

Taylor’s concept expands the definition of art and the institutions validating it as well.  The ocean as an endless space gives the exhibition an undeniable organic authority.  By submitting to the environment  and the powers that rule it, man remains humble to mother nature.

In water, the sculptures  look 25% larger than its actual size and because of the varying lights reaching the ocean floor the sculptures are bound to look different as time goes on and also depending on the time of the visit.  Everything about Taylor’s work relies on a mutual participation between the art and its environment and as he intent is also for that relationship to be a point of contention for the audience.

The sculptures are left in the water to grow into its environment and adapt to the surroundings and is in a constant state of metamorphosis.  One of the most intriguing yet plain work is “The Un-Still Life” which is a representation of the most common scene on which to base still life paintings.  In the ocean, nothing is still, and even this still-life attempt of fruits and a pitcher cemented on a table are subject to change.

Although most of Taylor’s time is spent on constructing the objects, the complementary work of nature is crucial for the experience.  The varying depths of the water level and the rate of absorption and reflection of light against the object naturally give off a kaleidoscopic effect.

One may point to concrete as the primary medium, but in this case it is important to consider the counter-medium which is water.  As a fluid, free flowing element in nature the limits of its property are unique.  With the ocean as a venue, Taylor’s work does not interfere with nature and instead interacts with it.  Requiring audiences to enter the properties of water also brings them into a state of weightlessness suspension from everyday life on land.

Pencil Sculptures

Brazilian miniature sculptor Dalton Ghetti creates these little lovely works of arts all from pencils.  These pencil sculptures are a side project for the professional carpenter, who has been perfecting this art for the last 25 years. Dalton uses a razor blade, sewing needle, a sculpting knife, a steady hand and lots of patience to meticulously carve the graphite which can take anywhere between a few months to a few years. Over time he has broken many works in progress and keeps them in what he calls the cemetery collection. One of the most fascinating things about these tiny works of art is that he has never sold them, only given away to friends as gifts. Ghetti is currently based in Connecticut.

THE FUTURE OF AIRLINE SEATING

Airline Seating
Lateral Steps In this version five lateral steps are used to access a second tier of seats, effectively doubling the number of passengers in conventional business class. It allows more space for suitcases, saving business travelers time by avoiding luggage check-in and pick-up. It’s also great for mothers traveling with babies. A mechanism that folds the stairs into the upper level would allow the crew to switch the module to economy or business seating depending on how many of each type of seat are booked. “This model has the greatest efficiency,” says Jacob. “I’ve had the question about handicapped people with this model, and they will always have priority for the first level.”

Airline Seating

Lateral Steps and Alternate Elevated Combined

Both the concepts of alternating the height of each window seat and using steps to create a second tier of middle seating are incorporated here. Despite obviously adding to the number of passengers, each would get their own bed and added privacy.

“Another plus is that it allows two travelers to be seated together if they wish,” says Jacob. “And it’s a lot more open with greater window views.”
